+++ The Global ‘Bit List’ of Endangered Digital Species +++

The Bit List is a free-to-access and open resource for digital preservation advocacy, revised by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) every two years. The list contains community-sourced at-risk digital materials. The goal of maintaining that list is to provide independent evidence that digital materials are critically endangered and raise awareness for preservation.

The current list contains entries from 2023 and will again be revised this year. Here you can read the list report from 2024. The entries are grouped by risk ‘classification’ and digital ‘species’. The following classifications are provided:

The digital species are grouped in thematic blocks like Apps, Gaming, Social Media, etc…

Similar to the protection of endangered species in the natural and environmental sciences, DPC and the community wants to protect at-risk digital materials. The list is always open for new nominations of digital materials. At the moment, you can contribute nominations for the review cycle 2025.

You can also take part in a survey reviewing the structure the Bit List and the process for review and publication.
