During the Europeana conference in June 2025, Twin it! Part II was launched by the European Commision and the Europeana Initiative. The second part of the project aims to connect to the first part and simultaneously take it one step further.
The overall goal of the project stays the same: to support 3D digitisation and preservation efforts among the EU member states. During the first part, the member states submitted 37 high-quality 3D models as representatives of their cultural heritage. Following the sevenfold list of priorities, the next step on the road to boosting 3D cultural heritage data is focusing on a “purpose-driven, user-focused approach to 3D digitisation” and the promotion of “re-use through enablement and capacity-building”.
Twin it! Part II is the first step towards putting this theory into practice. The member states are asked to submit (in collaboration with their cultural heritage institutions) “at least one high-quality 3D-digitised heritage asset to the data space with clear re-use intent, along with additional data, paradata and metadata”. This shall put the focus of digitisation on the practical use of the digital assets.
By emphasizing the visualization of re-use scenarios, the CHIs are obligated to think about their way of object representation, the need of additional (meta)data and objects (like 2D images) and the historical context. In 3D digitisation it is crucial to have the final picture in mind, so that the management of the project data works flawlessly.
The campaign is targeted at EU member states, but you can visit Europeana to learn more about the project and how you can contribute.
