October is here, and with it, GIF IT UP! Europeana’s annual GIF-making competition invites participants to explore and creatively remix open-access cultural heritage collections.
Alongside the usual prize categories, such as First-Time GIF-Maker, People’s Choice, and Children and Teenagers, this year’s edition features special categories for Science and Audiovisual Heritage, plus a Special Prize for Teachers: Creative Learning with Digital Heritage.
The teachers’ prize recognises creative, thoughtful learning experiences that combine meaningful use of digital cultural heritage with student creativity. Activities with clear learning objectives and learning outcomes are sought, whilst at the same time taking into account copyright, the citation of sources and the responsible use of digital media.
How to participate
Organise a GIF-making lesson, workshop or learning activity, perhaps connected to a topic you are currently teaching. Explore Europeana’s collections or those of our partner institutions for eligible open-access material, then select three GIFs together with your students. Submit these alongside a short description of your activity, its learning objectives and what your students learned.
The winning teacher will receive a Domestika three-course bundle and a €50 Etsy gift card.
GIF IT UP runs from 1 to 31 October 2026. Winners will be announced in November.
Find out more about the teachers’ prize and submit your activity through the teachers’ form.
